
Bob has provided this drawing for repairing certain types of wing spar damage. Experience shows that when wing spars are bent, the damage is often near the tip, right at the outboard end of the cap strips. This drawing applies to those types of situations. The idea is that the spar web material will be spliced at a point that is 8 rivets inboard of the cap strip end. This means removing 16 rivets on the top and 16 on the bottom. Cut the damaged spar web at the splice line and debur the edge. The new spar web material will need to match the old. In the case of factory spars, Bearhawk Aircraft is able to supply a matching piece of spar web material. For a scratch build, bend the new web to match the airplane. There is a doubler on the front and back of the splice. The doubler fits between the cap strips. If the splice line occurs in an area where there is no cap strip. The doubler should be full height (Labeled “X” in the drawing). Naturally this doesn’t cover every possible type of spar damage, just one of the most common. If in doubt with any repair, consult Bob.
