With the larger and heavier aircraft engines it would be best for balance considerations to locate the engine back as close to the firewall as clearance requirements will allow.
Take into account the needed clearance for such items as the spark plug wires, oil filters, vac systems, etc.
On the last Bearhawk (N33RB) I located the 0-540 at 56 1/2″ from the front of the crankshaft flange to the leading edge of the wing, not the 58 1/2″ as shown on the weight and balance sheet for N33RB..
