When I was floating the idea of building our next family airplane, I was told directly and read in the magazines many times, “If you want to fly, buy an airplane. Only build an airplane if you want to be a builder and flying is secondary.” That’s what “they” say. But I’ve never cared much for what they say.
At the time, I had an airplane. A Piper PA-16 Clipper. And she fit the mission at the time. I was a newly minted private pilot with my tailwheel endorsement and this was my first airplane. It had a stick, a tailwheel, just enough room for passengers OR gear for my adventures. With one passenger in the copilot seat, I could cram 2 mountain bikes or surfboards, camping gear and head off to our favorite places. My kids were only 2 and 4 at the time. With my wife in the copilot seat, we could actually cram the kids in the backseat with just enough room for a small picnic cooler and head out for some day trip fun. After many mountain bike and surf trips, camping trips with my son and sunset dates with my wife, it was clear that this passion of mine was something my family loved being a part of. We realized we were quickly going to outgrow the Clipper.

I started searching for the ideal plane that would fit the mission for both my own adventures and our family adventures. It would need to be a rugged, versatile airplane that could get us in and out of small and interesting places, with our outdoor gear and fuel to get us there. I love the pure act of flying and landing in cool places. But my pursuit of general aviation doesn’t stop there. For me, an airplane provides wider access to trails to ride, waves to surf, snow to shred, and nights under the stars. It opens the possibilities of what I can reach in a day or a weekend to pursue these outdoor passions of mine, but the gear has to fit in the back.
After a lengthy search for the ideal certified airplane, what I found was outside of our budget, or didn’t fit the mission. However, around this same time, I happened to run into Jared Yates on a paragliding launch. That day turned into a wonderful aviation story of its own, that I’ll save for another time. He proceeded to tell me about his Bearhawk, the building process and all the great things about the airplane. That lit a fire and I let that burn for a few months while still doing some looking around. Then, news of the Model 5 came out.
This was it. This was the one! I called Mark and discussed it a bit. I asked a few questions about the process and when kits would be available to the public and sat on the idea for a couple of months, until I had the cash to write a check to Mark. I was going to build an airplane. Really I didn’t have a choice. I wanted THIS airplane, so I had to build it. I had just finished a DIY total renovation of our home, so I was full of can-do confidence for a big project. I had also just watched a friend of mine complete a Kitfox and was excited about having the experience of building my own plane. The naysayers around the airport were still pretty loud. “Don’t build an airplane if you want to fly!” In their defense I certainly didn’t fit the profile of someone who had the time to build. I am a full-time dentist in a practice I started from scratch, have two toddlers, am a dedicated husband and enjoy a large handful of outdoor activities. Time is definitely something I make these days, not something I have. Ambition on the other hand, I have plenty of. So, I jumped in. I reserved a Model 5 quick-build kit, with all available options (dual brakes, wingtips, hardware, etc.) and would figure out the rest later. Right?
Well, fast forward 2 ½ years and we are on the home stretch! The fuselage is finished, covered, currently being painted and will be ready for avionics and firewall forward install this summer. I will be closing up the wings this spring and getting those into the paint booth too. The family excitement to fly is growing and I have to constantly remember to keep pushing and not get ahead of myself. The build process was very eye-opening for a first timer. The last couple of years have been filled with challenges, victories, frustrations and life lessons. Sometimes I wonder what I got myself into. But after pushing through those moments and showing up in the garage every week those feelings fade into an extreme sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that only comes when you push yourself beyond your current abilities to do something you’ve never done before. I’m learning so many skills and gaining experience that is bleeding into other parts of my life. I’ve learned to better optimize my time through thoughtful planning, review and adjustment which has resulted in even more quality time with my family while balancing work, play and airplane projects. There have been financial setbacks with the many surprises that real life throws your way. But as a family, we stayed in the game, dedicated to seeing this through and making some sacrifices along the way. We are getting there and enjoying the journey.
My approach to the build has been very similar to my home renovation. There are a few things that I was happy to outsource to save a little time and stay efficient. Instead of making my own seat covers and cushions, I called up Daniel at Sport Aircraft Seats and ended up with a great seat kit that was a breeze to install. They look and feel great. I got my wiring harness built for me by Advanced Avionics to go with the instrument package I bought from them. And the big one was paint. I heard from enough people that did not enjoy the spraying process that I decided that I could outsource that final part of the process too. That turned out to be a great choice. A local pro aircraft builder has a great paint booth and a bunch of experience. I was also able to get this done in stages which allowed me to keep building. I covered my fuselage in Poly-Fiber and finished that through the final Poly-Brush step. Then, I sent it to the booth to be sprayed. That allowed me to get the wings out and finish those while it was gone. In a few weeks I’ll be exchanging the wings for the fuselage and while the wings are in the booth I can get my engine mounted and get the firewall forward rolling.
For an engine, I called up Bob. He was great to chat with about options and very practical about where I could save money by using some new parts and some overhauled parts. He built me a 290hp angle valve Lycoming O-540 with bendix mags. This got me a great engine at a reasonable price. I have not yet been spoiled by fuel injection and e-mags so I won’t know what I’m missing. The Model 5 kit has been going together really well and the factory work on the kit parts is great. Now that we are feeling like we are actually going to finish this thing we have started dreaming about destinations. My son (6 now) keeps asking when we are going to Alaska. So that’s definitely a family trip on the list. We have a long list of destinations near and far where our Bearhawk will take us to camp, ride, surf, paraglide and meet new people. We are also looking forward to getting to know the Bearhawk community as we begin crossing paths with folks, hopefully sharing a few campfire stories.
Taking a somewhat blind leap into aircraft building to get the airplane we want at a price that fits our budget has turned into an amazing life experience. We are still building to fly, not building to build. We are looking forward to the flying chapter of this story, but the journey is providing its own rewards and has been very much worthwhile. Staring at the sky on a calm clear evening is all the motivation I need to get back in the garage and keep progressing. They say, “Don’t take any weeks off and leave the project sitting! You may struggle to get started again.” But sometimes the surf is good and the project needs to wait. Sometimes the mountains call and we need to head up and spend a week riding and unwinding. These are refuel stops for my mind. They keep me going. Besides, I’ve never really cared much for what “they” say.



Second Bearhawk Five

Collin Campbell has nearly completed his second Bearhawk Five, this time from a production kit. The FAA inspection is planned for the first week of October. This one has aux tanks, a third row of seats with corresponding windows, landing/strobe/nav lights, a full Garmin G3X system with heated pitot, and a 300HP Lycoming IO-540. The empty weight is 1597.

My interest in the Bearhawk came from a need for a plane to serve in our ministry in West Africa. My wife and I formed MA Global Mission and we are partnered with a local ministry in West Africa. This local ministry is a church planting and discipleship organization that provides medical, water well, agricultural, radio, TV, education and many other services to some of the most forgotten people on earth all of which are used to serve others and open doors to share the Gospel. Due to the remote nature of many of the ministries and the lack of actual airports in country I knew that we would need an airplane that could handle rough conditions and be a multi-use aircraft. I spent a lot of time flying and looking at every model I could. I looked at Maule, Cessna 182, 206, 210, Helio courier, Murphy aircraft etc. and nothing could meet all the requirements I had.
We are operating in remote areas of west Africa with avgas usually unavailable and even turbine fuel is scarce. We also only have 4 paved airports and a handful of dirt strips in the entire country so off airport operations will be common. I had several requirements:
1. Must burn auto fuel
2. True four place/six when needed
3. 1200 miles range with four people
4. IFR capable
5. Short field and off airport capable.
6. Capable of carrying stretcher
7. 300hp minimum (we will always be hot and heavy in the desert)
8. 140mph cruise
9. Large cargo capable.
After looking at and flying many different certified and non-certified aircraft I came across the Bearhawk line. Mike Blue and Bill Anton were kind enough to let me get some time in their wonderful aircraft. Mike’s being highly modified and Bill’s relatively stock. After flying the Bearhawk I was blown away by the performance, flying characteristics and overall design. I knew that Bob had designed a great flying, capable, rugged aircraft. I called Mark Goldberg and told him our mission upon which he said to wait a few months for the new model to be announced.
When the specs for the model five were shared I was ecstatic. We placed our deposit for a model five kit and I got to planning. At the heart of this build will be a Lycoming 580 controlled by the EFII system 32. I will show more on this motor on my YouTube channel (Virgil Irwin) but it will make well over 300hp on auto fuel. Robert Paisley has been fantastic to work with and has created a quality product. Upon fuel system research I decided the best route was to run a 5 gallon header tank fed by the main tanks. I had a 5 gallon cylinder tank made and mounted it behind the rear bulkhead, running 1/2in fuel lines through the walls to the rear mounted header tank. This setup provides 16in of fuel depth at all attitudes and will have a fuel level sender tied to the Garmin system showing fuel levels in the tank. In order to meet the range requirements I placed the additional aux tanks in the wings. For even greater range I built a carbon fiber belly pod that will house a 40 gal fuel bladder when needed and be used for cargo the rest of the time. The pod is built so that the fuel and cargo will be on cg and a smaller compartment in front of the gear struts can be used to place weight forward of the CG (tool kit).
The airframe was modified in several ways to meet our needs. The belly pod was a major modification as it is hard mounted to the airframe and will need to be installed for flight as belly fabric was terminated much further back to provide more depth within the pod.
Carbon control covers were built to provide control cable protection and electrical routing under the floor. Honeycomb core carbon fiber/Kevlar floor boards were built to accommodate heavier objects (motorcycles drilling equipment etc.). This mod created extremely rigid floors while pulling 8 pounds from the floor and placing the rudder cables under the floor. Gull wing doors were created and require no modification to the lower portion of door unlike the 4 place in which the threshold must be raised. Carbon concepts 18-inch Hoerner tips were added to the wings with Whelen landing lights in each tip.
So far building has been going really well and we hope to be flying in the first quarter of next year. Our mission is unique and the Bearhawk will open doors for us that I honestly believe no other aircraft can open. Visiting Mark Goldberg’s Ranch and Flying the Model Five

I recently found myself in need of an adventure and finally decided to take Mark Goldberg up on an offer he had been making me for years. He had offered me the opportunity to fly all of his Bearhawk airplanes and reminded me that Avipro now has 5 Bearhawk models. I contacted my traveling companions Scott and Kevin then we patiently waited through the month of March for a weather window. We finally departed in early April and made a two day trip to Mark’s ranch. Let me say first and foremost that Mark and Cathy were absolutely outstanding hosts. They saw to our every need, provided us with scrumptious meals and provided first class accommodations. Let me also say, however, that I was disappointed to discover that of the 5 models, Mark only had 3 in his hangar. His Patrol was awaiting a ferry flight home from Alaska and there weren’t any Companion models even flying yet. The two aircraft I most wanted to fly were the Patrol and the LSA, but the Patrol was unavailable and the wind never cooperated to allow us to fly the LSA. Still, Mark did have the Bearhawk 5 and he was extremely gracious in allowing us to fly it. And I do mean gracious, or should I say courageous, as so few have seen it, including Bob, and even fewer have flown it. I wish I could provide a worthwhile pilot report, but that sort of technical assessment is far beyond my abilities. As any of you who have met me at fly-ins can attest, my usual response to performance questions is “I don’t know”. I know how mine flies and how to get the performance I want out of it, but can’t seem to translate that any worthwhile performance numbers. So, let me give you my impressions. The plane is definitely bigger. Settling into the left seat it felt much roomier but I can’t say by how much as I didn’t have a front seat passenger. The visibility on the ground was outstanding, both over and beside the nose. The seat configuration has been changed which provided that improvement. So to was the configuration of the flap handle which I absolutely loved. No more groping at the floor to pull on the first notch or straining to pull on the last. If there was one change that I could incorporate into my plane that would be it. I am very familiar with my Bearhawk’s ability to leap off the ground, and yet I was surprised at how quickly the 5 leapt into the air. The engine / propeller combination they chose makes it a monster. The 5 is equipped with a multi function instrument while I am still a steam gauge kind of guy so I initially had trouble finding needed information, such as airspeed. As I rocketed skyward my impression was “this thing is fast”. I fly my plane in cruise at 20 squared, primarily to give me a fuel flow I can live with, so I don’t fly fast. I can’t attest to what the 5 can do as I never gave it its head but rather reigned it in to what felt more comfortable to me. I did several maneuvers at various flap and power settings and found it to be solid and predictable in all regimes. Nothing notable to report here. I did notice a difference in approach to landing though. The 5 has the new wing while mine has the original. My plane falls out of the sky when the power is pulled off so I set up my approaches expecting the same thing. I did three landings and found it necessary to slip every one in to lose altitude. Not a problem, just an adjustment. The 5 was a joy to fly and I think Bob and Mark have another winner in their stable. I am grateful to Mark for entrusting his new mount to me, but I still want to get my hands on a Patrol.

Builder Profile: Nathan Highmoor Scratch Building the Bearhawk Five in Grande Prairie Alberta

History: I got my start in the trades at a young age in the oil and gas patch, starting with welding and soon branching into all manner of metallurgy, pipe-fitting, power engineering and project management. Early on, I found myself on a grueling eight-hour commute between cities for work. I caught a glimpse of a small aircraft tearing past the bumper-to bumper traffic in the wide-open, traffic-free skies and booked myself into flight school the moment I arrived home. That was 25 years ago and I have been flying primarily for work since then.
In recent years, I started looking seriously for a more recreational bush plane that I could put on floats. One of my colleagues in our local hangar club mentioned the Bearhawk line, and while I liked the Bearhawk 4 Place, it didn’t have the gross weight I was looking for. I considered a Murphy Moose but the load capacity and fuel burn were not on point for me. At this point I saw the announcement that the Bearhawk 5 prototype was flying. I was immediately interested, particularly because of the modern wing design and carrying capacity. I ordered the plans for both the Bearhawk 5 (serial number 5009) and the Patrol (serial number P444) in August of last year and received the stack of sheet aluminum for the wings in October. Fast forward to today: The Bearhawk 5 wing structures are complete, with one wing standing in the skinning jig and the other assembled and ready. 4130 material for both fuselages has been ordered but is delayed again, possibly until fall. Currently, I am on fuel tank construction.
