Flights in my Bearhawk LSA continue to be filled with awesomeness and serenity. They begin with the preflight inspections that reveal the time honored designs of Bob Barrows. I think of the years I enjoyed building and flying the Bearhawk 4-Place and now the LSA. The LSA has proven to be the most enjoyable flying machine for me at age 63. With 75 hours on it and the Continental A65 with the Sensenich Carbon Fiber Propeller takeoffs are powerful and lift off occurs using only a few hundred feet of the earth’s surface! A 500’ per minute climb and a very stable and relaxing flight are followed by short landings. One such landing has been accomplished with a minimum of 200’ ground roll-with a 5 knot headwind.
I made the journey to he Barrows Field and homestead late September of 2022. On this flight at 2000’ altitude I watched as an eagle glided towards me. It reminded me of one of my favorite scriptures, “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 NLT
The flight included a landing at Weaver’s Landing near Bridgewater, VA. I flew over Bob and Mike at Barrows Field and taxied up to their shop to see them walk around the plane inspecting the build. Well, I was glad it passed their careful examinations! It is always pleasant to be around these amazing entrepreneurs. I departed the next day and returned to Smoketown, PA so thankful I choose to once again build a Bearhawk aircraft. The visibility from within this very roomy cabin is excellent. It’s design is just the way it should be for men and women who enjoy lightweight traveling.
My wife is a wonderful flying companion and enjoys the beauty of creation from 1000’AGL where she can still see the landscape around the houses below. One day we flew to Slatington, PA, 69N.
There pilots are provided bicycles from a small shed to ride on the D & L Trail along the beautiful Lehigh River. We chose the tandem
style bike. Recently, we enjoyed a flight to the Massey Aerodrome in MD.
The cruise speed is 100 MPH at 2520 RPM. I enjoy smooth landings using a final approach speed of 60 MPH, the speed quickly diminishes as I initiate the flare and touch down. Slower speeds result in very short landings but must be executed with precision to avoid a hard landing. I want to enjoy many years of wonderful experiences and so I choose to fly the LSA in a safe envelope of weight and balance.

Andrew Hamilton’s Bearhawk 4-Place 5Y-CFX

Here are a some pictures of my Bearhawk 4-Place. I bought her about 2 years ago while I was doing my PPL. After completing that I trained on this plane. What a wild thing compared to my school plane, which was a very tired C172, which I did not like at first but actually became very fond of the old girl.
After that, onto this girl. I love it. She has an IO 390x engine with API fuel injection. Rated at 210hp. 4 fuel tanks with usable 69
gallons which gives me amazing endurance. Definitely needed in Kenya. It has a Dynon Skyview system with autopilot. Performs brilliantly even with 3 adults, full fuel and loads of camping gear. I operate out of a dirt strip at 6250ft MSL and most days DA is about 2000ft above
that. I’m still a very junior pilot and so fly very conservatively as I learn her ways. Best regards and looking forward to meeting more Bearhawk flyers and learning more about the planes.

The airplane was originally flown in the United States and subsequently imported to Africa.

About 15 years ago I met Greg Connell, an Airshow performer that would later become a great friend. We met at an air show he was performing in, and I was displaying a Murphy moose I helped build. He asked if I would help him build his Bearhawk. He passed away a few years later, before I could get started on his project.
I purchased the quick-build kit from his widow which included an overhauled O-540 and Hartzell 3 blade prop. I think it was a year before I took the wings out of the crate. Months and even years went by with minimal progress.
Two things happened that got me motivated. I found a life partner that loves to fly and I got my seaplane rating. Game on! Welding on float fittings somehow got me going.
First flight was mid December 2022. Performance was better than anticipated.

Tyler Williams Bearhawk Five Update Spring 2023

When I was floating the idea of building our next family airplane, I was told directly and read in the magazines many times, “If you want to fly, buy an airplane. Only build an airplane if you want to be a builder and flying is secondary.” That’s what “they” say. But I’ve never cared much for what they say.
At the time, I had an airplane. A Piper PA-16 Clipper. And she fit the mission at the time. I was a newly minted private pilot with my tailwheel endorsement and this was my first airplane. It had a stick, a tailwheel, just enough room for passengers OR gear for my adventures. With one passenger in the copilot seat, I could cram 2 mountain bikes or surfboards, camping gear and head off to our favorite places. My kids were only 2 and 4 at the time. With my wife in the copilot seat, we could actually cram the kids in the backseat with just enough room for a small picnic cooler and head out for some day trip fun. After many mountain bike and surf trips, camping trips with my son and sunset dates with my wife, it was clear that this passion of mine was something my family loved being a part of. We realized we were quickly going to outgrow the Clipper.

I started searching for the ideal plane that would fit the mission for both my own adventures and our family adventures. It would need to be a rugged, versatile airplane that could get us in and out of small and interesting places, with our outdoor gear and fuel to get us there. I love the pure act of flying and landing in cool places. But my pursuit of general aviation doesn’t stop there. For me, an airplane provides wider access to trails to ride, waves to surf, snow to shred, and nights under the stars. It opens the possibilities of what I can reach in a day or a weekend to pursue these outdoor passions of mine, but the gear has to fit in the back.
After a lengthy search for the ideal certified airplane, what I found was outside of our budget, or didn’t fit the mission. However, around this same time, I happened to run into Jared Yates on a paragliding launch. That day turned into a wonderful aviation story of its own, that I’ll save for another time. He proceeded to tell me about his Bearhawk, the building process and all the great things about the airplane. That lit a fire and I let that burn for a few months while still doing some looking around. Then, news of the Model 5 came out.
This was it. This was the one! I called Mark and discussed it a bit. I asked a few questions about the process and when kits would be available to the public and sat on the idea for a couple of months, until I had the cash to write a check to Mark. I was going to build an airplane. Really I didn’t have a choice. I wanted THIS airplane, so I had to build it. I had just finished a DIY total renovation of our home, so I was full of can-do confidence for a big project. I had also just watched a friend of mine complete a Kitfox and was excited about having the experience of building my own plane. The naysayers around the airport were still pretty loud. “Don’t build an airplane if you want to fly!” In their defense I certainly didn’t fit the profile of someone who had the time to build. I am a full-time dentist in a practice I started from scratch, have two toddlers, am a dedicated husband and enjoy a large handful of outdoor activities. Time is definitely something I make these days, not something I have. Ambition on the other hand, I have plenty of. So, I jumped in. I reserved a Model 5 quick-build kit, with all available options (dual brakes, wingtips, hardware, etc.) and would figure out the rest later. Right?
Well, fast forward 2 ½ years and we are on the home stretch! The fuselage is finished, covered, currently being painted and will be ready for avionics and firewall forward install this summer. I will be closing up the wings this spring and getting those into the paint booth too. The family excitement to fly is growing and I have to constantly remember to keep pushing and not get ahead of myself. The build process was very eye-opening for a first timer. The last couple of years have been filled with challenges, victories, frustrations and life lessons. Sometimes I wonder what I got myself into. But after pushing through those moments and showing up in the garage every week those feelings fade into an extreme sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that only comes when you push yourself beyond your current abilities to do something you’ve never done before. I’m learning so many skills and gaining experience that is bleeding into other parts of my life. I’ve learned to better optimize my time through thoughtful planning, review and adjustment which has resulted in even more quality time with my family while balancing work, play and airplane projects. There have been financial setbacks with the many surprises that real life throws your way. But as a family, we stayed in the game, dedicated to seeing this through and making some sacrifices along the way. We are getting there and enjoying the journey.
My approach to the build has been very similar to my home renovation. There are a few things that I was happy to outsource to save a little time and stay efficient. Instead of making my own seat covers and cushions, I called up Daniel at Sport Aircraft Seats and ended up with a great seat kit that was a breeze to install. They look and feel great. I got my wiring harness built for me by Advanced Avionics to go with the instrument package I bought from them. And the big one was paint. I heard from enough people that did not enjoy the spraying process that I decided that I could outsource that final part of the process too. That turned out to be a great choice. A local pro aircraft builder has a great paint booth and a bunch of experience. I was also able to get this done in stages which allowed me to keep building. I covered my fuselage in Poly-Fiber and finished that through the final Poly-Brush step. Then, I sent it to the booth to be sprayed. That allowed me to get the wings out and finish those while it was gone. In a few weeks I’ll be exchanging the wings for the fuselage and while the wings are in the booth I can get my engine mounted and get the firewall forward rolling.
For an engine, I called up Bob. He was great to chat with about options and very practical about where I could save money by using some new parts and some overhauled parts. He built me a 290hp angle valve Lycoming O-540 with bendix mags. This got me a great engine at a reasonable price. I have not yet been spoiled by fuel injection and e-mags so I won’t know what I’m missing. The Model 5 kit has been going together really well and the factory work on the kit parts is great. Now that we are feeling like we are actually going to finish this thing we have started dreaming about destinations. My son (6 now) keeps asking when we are going to Alaska. So that’s definitely a family trip on the list. We have a long list of destinations near and far where our Bearhawk will take us to camp, ride, surf, paraglide and meet new people. We are also looking forward to getting to know the Bearhawk community as we begin crossing paths with folks, hopefully sharing a few campfire stories.
Taking a somewhat blind leap into aircraft building to get the airplane we want at a price that fits our budget has turned into an amazing life experience. We are still building to fly, not building to build. We are looking forward to the flying chapter of this story, but the journey is providing its own rewards and has been very much worthwhile. Staring at the sky on a calm clear evening is all the motivation I need to get back in the garage and keep progressing. They say, “Don’t take any weeks off and leave the project sitting! You may struggle to get started again.” But sometimes the surf is good and the project needs to wait. Sometimes the mountains call and we need to head up and spend a week riding and unwinding. These are refuel stops for my mind. They keep me going. Besides, I’ve never really cared much for what “they” say.

George’s airplane is built from scratch (plans 493) over a period of 16 years. It is one of a set of four building friends, including Cam Lawrence whose first flight was last year, Ziggy Smolinski (#3) who should fly his next year, and a fourth that is too early to set a completion expectation. George’s first flight was on November 23rd, 2022. Insulation was added to the floor and sidewalls, and the cabin includes a tinted skylight plus windows in the lower front doors for landing gear viewing. Seats are covered in leather. The empty weight came in at 1532 pounds with a CG of 10.85 inches.
The engine is a Lycoming I0-540-C4B5 with a standard Bendix RSA type fuel injection system, E-Mag ignition system series 200-6XL, Air flow performance 110-degree intake elbow with K&N E-0995 air filter and custom housing with manually actuated alternate air. The exhaust is from Vetterman. The oil system includes a B&C Specialty oil filter adapter PN BC702, a CH48108 filter, and 9 row oil cooler. The propeller is a Hartzell HC-C2YK-1BF C/W with a polished spinner, Saber Manufacturing 4-inch prop extension, and MT-P860-5 governor. George installed electric cowl flaps by using a Ray Allen B6-11T actuator.
The electric system includes an Odyssey Powersafe Dry Cell Battery (SBS J-16) and a 12-volt main battery, charged by a B&C 460-H 60-amp alternator with 0706742 voltage regulator.
The panel is built around the Dynon Avionics SkyView Classic system with single PFD, dual com, Mode S transponder, ADSB, 2 place intercom, knob control, and 2-axis autopilot. He used the Dynon Remote magnetometer (SV-MAG-236) and also installed a Dynon EFIS SV-Bat-320 back up battery. There is an ipad flush-mounted in the panel, and also an, Airpath C2400 L4P wet compass. The ACK E-04 406 ELT is coupled to GPS so that it can send coordinates to search and rescue. Electric trim is driven by Ray Allen T12-10A servos, two for the elevator and one installed at the rudder.
Lighting comes from Aveo combination position/strobe lights, dual Aero-led Microsun landing lights, and interior 754 series Red/White LED lights for the cabin and panel.
The landing gear includes a Bob tailwheel fabricated from R&B drawing with 4” wheel and 10×3:50×4 tire, flat leaf spring, Cleveland 6” mainwheels with 8:00X6 tires and dual piston Cleveland brake calipers. It is also set up for Aero-Skii M2000 skis with a spring bungee, and EDO 2870 floats.
The fuel system features the Andair FS20-4 fuel selector and GAS375 Gascolator, Airflow Performance electric fuel boost pump PN 2090255, Princeton capacitance fuel probes for each tank, and positive vents mounted on bottom of wing just behind the strut (to defect any debris or rain while in flight). Wing-mounted fuel tanks are replaced with “wet wing” integral fuel tank system with a capacity of 257 liters (68 US gal).
The aircraft is covered with Stewarts Systems fabric system and painted with base Insignia White, Firethorn Red, Bahama Blue and Smoke grey striping, using a paint mask. Main entry doors were converted from original design to a single gull wing door opening to the wing lower surface with gas struts as hold open rods. There is a custom sliding window mechanism made by cutting slots into a plastic track.
The horizontal stab mounts were welded in place with the mounting bolt accessed from inside the fuselage and a removable metal cover was installed on the belly from the tailpost to the next station for easy access to the inside tail section. On the horizontal stab a wood spacer shaped to the airfoil shape was glued to the inboard rib and trimmed to minimize the space between the fuse and the stab so no fairing was required.
Elevator up and down position stop was modified by adding an internally threaded 4130 tube welded to the tailpost with an adjustable stop (bolt) which contacts the elevator bellcrank. Aileron travel limiting stops were added at the aileron bellcrank area by welding a 4130 tube to the compression strut and a using a stop bolt which contacts the bellcrank to provide aileron stops (photo above). Positive control stops are a Canadian regulatory requirement.
Hoerner style wing tips were fabricated using foam cut to shape and covered with two layers of carbon fiber. One layer of fiberglass mounted edges was built up using fiberglass to stiffen them up (3.5 lbs. each). George says, “First flight 1.5 hours, couple minor adjustments required, but WOW such a thrill.”

Second Bearhawk Five

Collin Campbell has nearly completed his second Bearhawk Five, this time from a production kit. The FAA inspection is planned for the first week of October. This one has aux tanks, a third row of seats with corresponding windows, landing/strobe/nav lights, a full Garmin G3X system with heated pitot, and a 300HP Lycoming IO-540. The empty weight is 1597.

Scott from South Africa sends photos of two newly-completed Bearhawk LSA projects, ZU-ISP and ZUIRW. Scott says, “Here are some pictures of my Bearhawk LSA. The other plane in the photo was built together with mine by Coenraad Underhay. He built them from scratch but used the wing kits for the wings. He has done a stirling job on both machines.” They both have the O-200 engine and we’re both around 370 kg (815 pounds) empty.

I attended Frank’s fly-in earlier this month (Frank is “PropMan” on bearhawkforums.com). In Texas everything is 200 miles away. Frank’s place is only 170 miles from my house – so, it counts as a local event.
As Texas fly-ins go, it was a very civil affair. I saw mostly Cessna 170s and a few Rans airplanes. Frank had his Baby Ace out which looked tiny compared to the Cessnas.
I drove there. I do not know if it would have been possible to find the place a few years back. I needed my cell phone to tell me which way to go. It is not far from another Texas fly-in called Critter’s Lodge. Critter’s Lodge fly-in had a P-51 buzzing the field; you do not feel safe on the ground or in the air. The only thing that might give one pause at Frank’s is that he has a cannon pointed at the runway. I think you should call ahead before visiting.
I drove in from Austin, TX. Austin might have large bushes. The area Frank is from actually has trees. The only similarity is temperatures in both places are in the 100’s. When I was asked to write a trip report, I was disappointed with myself. I found that I had not taken any pictures of his place or the airplanes there with the exception of Frank’s LSA. When I watch the Bearhawk community’s YouTube videos, I often find that they panned over something I was interested in. I have a lot of pictures of what a good-looking weld looks like but no pictures of the fly-in. I did think about taking pictures of Frank’s tractor. I do not need a tractor; I just want a tractor.
It is a well-known characteristic of builders that they are interested in the tools used by other builders. For the most part, it is just like the tractor fixation. You just want one. I was expecting to come home with my normal tool shopping list. This time I found that my fascination was with another of Frank’s activities. Frank had made his own propeller. I had gone to Frank’s trying to figure out if my welds were as good as the professionals’. Frank showed me how a propeller is made. They are made completely different than I would have guessed. Now I find that I want to build a propeller.
Admittedly, I am not very focused. Today, I walked by a Vermeer horizontal directional boring drill. As always, I do not need one – I just want one. You never know when you might need a tunnel under your house. I can put it next to the tractor I do not need.
